근대계몽기 잡지의 독자 전략과 역사 전기 서사물 : ‘을지문덕’의 서사화를 중심으로

A Study on the Strategies for Readers of the Magazine and the Historical Biography Narrative in the Modern Enlightenment Era : Focusing on the narrative of EuljiMundeok

근대계몽기 애국계몽 운동의 일환으로 다수의 학회활동이 이루어지고 학회지들이 쏟아져 나왔다. 그 가운데 각 지역의 특성에 맞는 지역 학회들이 설립되는데, 이 지역 학회들은 학회지를 통해서 애국과 계몽을 실천하기 위해 문예면을 활용하였다. 그 가운데 역사 전기 서사물은 지역 독자층에게 애국심을 증진시킬 수 있는 중요한 계몽 문예로 자리매김하게 되었다. 또한 같은 역사 전기 서사물이라 하더라도 각 지역 학회지의 특징과 독자층 전략에 따라 변이를 보여준다. 특히 『서우』는 좀 더 한문에 익숙한 청년층을 대상으로, 『호남학보』는 상대적으로 한문에 덜 익숙한 유소년층을 독자층으로 삼았다.

따라서 역사 전기 서사물은 근대계몽기 각 지역별 청년들과 유소년층을 대상으로 교육과 계몽의 목적으로 활용되었다. 이러한 역사 전기 서사물은 이전 역사서가 근대문학으로 이행되는 그 과정 속에서 존재하고 있었다. 전근대적인 영웅의식을 담은 역사서를 지금, 여기의 현재성으로 다시 재해석하고, 근대의 ‘개인’을 발견하며 청년들과 유소년층들을 계몽하고자 했다. 또한 이러한 가운데 유소년층들을 새롭게 발견함으로써, 역사는 특별한 영웅에 의해서 바뀌는 것이 아니라, 개개인 한 사람에 의해서 바뀌어 가는 것임을 역설하기도 했다.

이렇게 볼 때, 역사서로부터 근대문학의 새로운 역사 문학으로 이행되는 과정 속에 지역 학회지에 실린 다양한 역사 전기 서사물들이 존재함으로써, 역사 전기 서사물들은 그 변이의 과정을 오롯이 담아내고 있었다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 변이의 과정은 지역의 각 학회지가 상정한 독자층에 대한 전략을 고민하는 가운데 등장한 것이다. 또한 이러한 과정에서 새로운 독자층, 즉 청년 독자층과 유소년 독자층을 발견해내고, 이들을 대상으로 한 새로운 문예를 창출하고자 하는 여러 실험들을 통해서 근대문학은 서서히 태동되고 있었다고 할 수 있다.

A number of academic activities and journals poured out as part of the patriotic enlightenment movement during the modern enlightenment era. Among them, local academic societies were established to suit the characteristics of each region, which used literary and artistic aspects to practice patriotism and enlightenment through academic journals. Among them, the prehistory of history has become an important enlightenment literary art that can promote patriotism among local readers. In addition, even the same historical biographical epic shows variations according to the characteristics of each local academic journal and the reader's strategy. In particular, The magazine Seowoo is aimed at young people who are more familiar with Chinese characters, and The magazine, Honamhakbo is based on young people who are less familiar with Chinese characters.

Therefore, the prehistory of history was used for the purpose of education and enlightenment for young people and boys in each region during the modern enlightenment period. These historical biographical narratives existed in the process of the transition of previous historical books to modern literature. Each academic journal reinterpreted history books containing a pre-modern sense of heroism to the present here, and sought to enlighten young people and boys by discovering modern “individuals.” The magazine also stressed that by newly discovering the boys among them, history is not changed by a particular hero, but by an individual.

In this regard, various historical and biographical essays published in the local academic journals during the transition from the historical books to the new historical literature of modern literature were present, thus capturing the process of variation. This process of transformation has emerged as each local academic journal is considering a strategy for its readership. In this process, modern literature was slowly beginning to develop through experiments to discover new readers, young people readers and boys readers, and create new literary works for them.
