‘민중’을 향한, 전도적 상상력과 전복(顚覆)의 서사 : 신채호 문학(론)에 대한 고찰

The narrative of revolutionary imagination and reform of the people : A Study on Shin Chae-ho's Literature

문학(사)의 구성을 논하는 데 있어 단재 신채호(申采浩, 호는 丹齋, 1880~1936)가 지닌 문학론을 한 마디로 규정하기엔 어려움이 있다. 이는 무엇보다도 그의 문학에 대한 서술이 지닌 다양한 층위 때문일 것이다. ‘전통’과 ‘근대’를 넘나들면서 조선의 ‘민족’을 호명하는 동시에 그 주체성을 자각케 하려는 신채호의 사상의 층위는 폭넓은 저작물들에 녹아져 있다. 역사서를 비롯하여, 논설, 소설, 전기, 시 등을 통해 뿜어져 나오는 그의 사유의 변폭은 실로 방대하기까지 하다. 이 글은, ‘신채호의 서사물들을 관통하는 사유의 근원은 무엇이었을까?’ 질문으로부터 시작된다.

우선 신채호가 지닌 사상의 거점은 ‘본질주의적인 것’에 놓여 있었다. 이는 항구적이며 보편적인 도(道)와 상통한다. 또한 형식이 아닌 근본정신을 강조하는 것이다. 국가 생존이 위협받았던 1900년대, 신채호는 응집된 힘을 발휘할 수 있는 ‘주체’의 창조와 형성을 꿈꾼다. 이를 위해 ‘아(我)’의 개념을 강조하며, ‘아’를 바탕으로 한 ‘민족’이라는 공동체를 구성하는 데 몰두한다. 민족으로 규정되는 ‘아’는 독립적 존재이자 힘의 정치적 논리를 수용하는 한편, 이를 뛰어넘는 가능성을 지닌 존재여야 했다. 더불어 ‘민족’에게 자국의 문명과 깨우침을 주는 작업에 대해 구상하는데, 그 ‘학문’은 두 가지 방향으로 전개된다. 하나는 언어 중심의 ‘학(學)’이며, 다른 하나는 ‘학’의 외연을 지지해 줄 ‘상무(尙武)’의 논리였다. 그는 자국 생성의 기반이 되는 ‘국문학’과 소설론을 주창했으며 혁명을 위한 무기로써 문학을 선택했다. 특히 그는 문학 작품 중에서도 민중적 서사를 지향했는데, 그 까닭은 민중으로부터 비롯된 ‘앎’의 문학을 구축함을 통해 새로운 ‘국가’ 형성을 이루고자 했던 그의 열망 때문이었다.

In discussing the composition of literature, it is difficult to define the literary theory of Danjae Shin Chae-ho (1880-1936). This may be due, among other things, to the various levels of his narrative of literature. Shin Chae-ho's thought to call Joseon's “ethnic” by crossing “traditional” and “modern” is reflected in a wide range of works. The variation of his reasons in history books, editorials, novels, biographies, and poems is truly enormous. The article begins with the question, 'What was the source of the cause that penetrated Shin's epic?' This could be said by changing the keywords that penetrated the various narratives of Shin Chae-ho had.

First of all, Shin Chae-ho's base of ideas lay in the “natureist thing.” This is consistent with a permanent and universal province. It also emphasizes fundamental spirit, not formality. In the 1900s, when national survival was threatened, Shin dreams of creating and forming a “main body” that can exert cohesive power. To this end, they emphasize the concept of “a” and devote themselves to forming a community called “ethnic” based on “a.” “Ah,” defined as a nation, should have been an independent being and a potential beyond that, while embracing the political logic of power. In addition, it envisions the work of giving “ethnic” its civilization and enlightenment, which develops in two directions. One was language-oriented “hak,” and the other was “Sangmu's logic” to support the outside world of “hak.” He advocated “Korean literature” and “fiction” as the basis for his country's creation and chose literature as a weapon for revolution. In particular, he pursued a popular narrative among literary works because of his desire to form a new “nationality” by building up the literature of “knowledge” from the people.
