마해송의 『앙그리께』에 나타난 만남의 우연성에 관한 연구

A Study on the Contingency of Encounter in 『Angriggae』 by Ma Hae-Song

『앙그리께』는 마해송의 첫 장편동화이다. 그간 『앙그리께』에 관한 연구는 작품 속에 드러난 역사와 작가의 정치적 의식 또는 특정 종교적 측면에서만 분석되어왔다. 작가 마해송이 왜 장편동화를 통해 이 이야기를 해야만 했는지, 『앙그리께』만이 가진 미학적 요소가 무엇인지 살피려는 시도는 없었다. 본 논문은 그 지점에 주목하여 장편동화 『앙그리께』의 미학적 특성을 작품 내적인 측면에서 살펴본다.

작품 내에 등장하는 ‘만남의 우연성’은 긍정적으로 기능하며 작품의 동력이 되고 있다. 작중인물들의 우연한 만남은 그 자체로서 보상으로 인식되어야 한다. 영애와 가족들이 겪어내는 역경과 그때 만나는 새로운 인연들이야말로 생존 투쟁에서 얻을 수 있는 유일한 것이다. 우연성을 통하여 작중 인물들이 각자의 자리를 찾아나가는 이 작품은 우연성의 남발이 아닌, 그 자체를 승리로 기입하는 데 성공한 이야기로 볼 수 있다. 이때 주인공들의 자아 핵심 자체를 형성하는 ‘절대적 부정성’은 인간다움과 공존의식으로 드러난다. 여러 인물들의 입을 통해 발화되는 대사 “앙그리께”는 극의 초·중·후반부에 각각 다른 의미로 변화되는 양상을 보인다.

우연적 만남과 대사 “앙그리께”의 반복으로 이루어 낸 인간다움과 공존의식의 강조는 다수의 사건들이 얽히고설키면서 조직된 복합적인 장편동화였기에 가능했던 것으로 볼 수 있다.

『Angriggae』 is the first full-length children’s story by Ma Hae-Song. Till now, most previous studies on 『Angriggae』 solely focused on either historical consciousness or political consciousness of the author, or the aspect of a certain religion, and there was no attempt to address why the author chose a format of full-length children’s story or its aesthetic element. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the aesthetic element of 『Angriggae』 from its internal aspect.

The contingency of encounter is positively functioning in this story, and becoming the power to lead the story. The accidental encounter of the characters should be considered as a reward itself. Only the new relationships that Yeongae and her family establishes after overcoming a series of misfortunes are the only reward that they could earn from harsh struggles for survival.

This story, in which the characters claim their positions via contingency, is trying to give the idea that contingency could be rewarding as it is, rather than simple overuse of contingency. ‘Absolute negativity’, constructing the core of the self for the main characters are expressed as human decency and consciousness of co-existence. The phrase “Angriggae” spoken by various characters is changing in its meaning in the beginning, middle, and late part of the story.

The author’s intention of emphasizing both human decency and consciousness of co-existence via contingent encounters and repeatition of “Angriggae” in the story has been successful since it is a children’s story in which various events are intermingled and tangled.
