A Study on the Narrative Strategy in ‘The Island Swallowed Myth’

본 논문은 『신화를 삼킨 섬』에 나타난 알레고리적 의미와 양상에 대해 살펴보고 신화 너머에 숨겨둔 속뜻을 통해 작가의 입장이나 의도를 파악함으로써 이청준 소설의 특질을 밝히는데 목적을 둔다.

2장에서는 아기장수 설화에 관한 알레고리적 독해 방법으로 분석했다. 본고는 아기장수 설화에 등장하는 아기장수, 부모, 권력층, 그리고 아기장수가 존재할 수 있도록 조력한 용마와 같은 주요 키워드들이 갖는 관계의 상징성과 그 의미를 살펴보았다. 또한 아기장수의 죽음을 프롤로그와 에필로그 앞뒤로 배치한 서술 장치 및 용마바위란 장소의 알레고리를 통해 4·3사건의 대량학살이 벌어진 남선리 뒤 고갯길에 대한 공간적 의미에 대해서도 살펴보았다. 한편 3장에서는 아기장수 변이형인 김통정 설화 속에 담긴 영웅과 이웃 간의 관계 상징성에 주목하였다. 이는 작가의 이전 소설들에서 나타난 이웃에 관한 소재들과도 관련시켜 살펴볼 수 있는데 이웃에 대한 작중화자의 두려움과 배신은 이 소설상에서도 전개된다. 4장에서는 이 소설에 숨겨진 서사적 장치에 대해 살펴보았다. K시와 지팡이 사내의 횃불행렬이 5·18 광주 민주화 항쟁으로 해석되어 온 것이 기존 논의들이라면 이와 달리 본고는 이러한 시간적 배치 자체를 5·18을 연상시키게끔 독자들을 압박하게 만드는 전략을 강구한 작가의 의도에 대해 분석하였다.

작가는 신화라는 알레고리를 통해 소설 속에서 벌어지는 현실적인 문제에 대한 암시된 의미를 숨겨두어 독자들의 역할을 촉구하고 있다. 흥미롭게도 이청준은 독자들이 숨겨진 요소들을 찾지 못하도록 함정을 파둔 초기소설 때와는 달리 후기 소설에 오게 되면 이른바 이청준식만의 ‘이중적 장치’란 전략을 구사한다. 요컨대 『신화를 삼킨 섬』은 독자들이 이청준의 숨겨둔 의도를 알아차리지 못하더라도 여러 뉘앙스들을 통해 작가가 의도하는 바가 무엇인지 알아차릴 수 있게 하거나 혹 텍스트를 꼼꼼하게 분석하는 독자들의 경우 작가가 위장한 장치들을 통해 그가 무엇을 감추기 위해 이러한 장치를 이용했는가 생각해 보게끔 만드는 전략을 보여준다. 작가의 이러한 서술 의도는 독서를 단순히 읽기만 하는 텍스트가 아니라 독자 스스로 텍스트 내부에 참여를 하여 즐기는 텍스트로써의 가능성을 여전히 유지시키면서도 소설의 긴장감을 잃지 않게 만든다.

This paper explores the Allegoric meaning and aspects of ‘The island swallowed a myth’ And it aims to characterize Lee Chung-jun's novel by understanding the writer's position or intention through the meaning hidden beyond the myth. In Chapter 2, we analyzed the story of a baby hero as an Allegory reading. The book looked at the symbolic meaning and meaning of relationships among keywords such as a baby hero, parents, powerful people, and a dragon horse that help a baby hero to exist in a baby hero story. We also looked at the spatial meaning of the trail behind Namseon-ri, where the massacre took place, through Allegory, a narrative device that arranged the death of a baby hero, and a dragon horse rock. Meanwhile, Chapter 3 focused on the symbolic nature of the relationship between the hero and the neighbor in the legend of Kim Tong-jeong, a variation of a baby hero's story. This can also be related to the subject of the author's previous novels, which also unfolded the writer's fear and betrayal of his neighbors. Chapter 4 explores the epic strategy behind the novel. The existing discussions have been interpreted as a May 18 Gwang-ju democratic uprising. However, this paper analyzed the intentions of the author, who came up with a strategy to pressure readers to remind them of the time layout itself of May 18.

Through the Allegory of Mythology, the author seeks to play the role of the reader by hiding the suggestive meaning of the realistic problems in the novel. Interestingly, unlike the early novels that set up traps for readers not to find hidden elements, Lee Chung-jun uses the so-called dual-device strategy of Lee Chung-jun when he comes to later novels. In short, ‘The island swallowed a myth’ allows readers to recognize the writer's intentions through various nuances even if they do not realize Lee Chung Jun's hidden intentions. And, for readers who carefully analyze text, it shows a strategy that makes the writer think about what he used to hide through the disguised devices. The author's intention to describe the book is not just a read-only text, but rather to keep the reader from losing the tension in the novel while still maintaining the possibility of the text he enjoys by participating in it himself.
