초록

트라우마 서사는 폴 윤 소설의 주요한 특징 중 하나로, 대부분 현대인들이 겪는 각종 트라우마 문제를 반영하면서 동시에 트라우마의 회복과 치유 과정을 탐색한다. 소설 『눈 사냥꾼들』에서 폴 윤은 다각적인 모더니즘의 서사 방식을 활용하여 전쟁 포로인 요한이 겪는 트라우마에 관한 다양한 경험과 사건을 보여주었다. 소설의 묘사를 통해 트라우마의 후유증이 요한의 신체 곳곳에서 나타나지만, 이와 같은 표현은 폴 윤이 궁극적으로 전달하고자 하는 목적은 아니라는 것을 알 수 있다. 실제로 이와 같은 후유증을 통해 요한이 과감하게 과거와 자아를 직시할 수 있도록 구성하였다. 본 연구는 트라우마 이론을 활용하여 소설 속 인물이 경험하고 목격한 트라우마, 그리고 궁극적으로 트라우마의 치유와 심리적 재구성을 고찰했다. 또한, 전쟁의 위선과 참혹함, 인간성에 대한 왜곡과 파괴를 표현한 점은 폴 윤이 보여준 트라우마 서사의 중요한 가치이자, 시사점이다.

Abstract

Traumatic narration is a prominent feature of Paul Yoon's novels, which, on the one hand, reflects various traumas that most modern individuals experience, and, on the other, explores the processes of repairing and healing traumas. In The Snow Hunters, Paul Yoon employs a multi-faceted modernist narrative approach to show the multiple traumatic experience and events that Yohan, the protagonist, suffered as a prisoner. Through the narration, it can be seen that Trauma syndrome is present diversely on Yohan. But the presentation is not the author's final goal. In fact, by presenting the syndrome, Paul Yoon aims to encourage the protagonist to confront his past and confront himself. Based on the trauma theory, this article analyzes the traumas experienced and witnessed by the novel's characters, as well as their final fulfillment of trauma healing and psychology reshaping. And it reveals the hypocrisy and absurdity of war, and its distortion and devastation of humanity, which is also the significant value and revelation of Paul Yoon's trauma writing.
