‘통속’을 통한 ‘리얼리즘’의 심화 : 엄흥섭의 『세기의 애인』(1939) 재독
초록
이 논문은 『세기의 애인』을 재독하여, 연재분과 단행본의 차이를 밝히고 작가가 추구한 리얼리즘의 형상화 방식을 고찰하는 데 목적을 두었다. 그간 선행연구에서는 연재 위주로 분석된 까닭에, 완결된 형식의 측면에서 인물의 심리 변화와 현실 대응 방식이 면밀하게 해석되지 않았다. 또한, 남성 주인공의 태도가 곧장 작품의 특성으로 규정되었기 때문에 재독의 필요성이 있었다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 다음의 내용을 논의하였다. 첫째, 『세기의 애인』이 당대 논자들에게 평가된 방식을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 통속과 예술이 어우러졌다는 긍정적인 평가와 도식적이고 부르주아적인 연애소설이라는 비판이 공존하고 있었다. 이 시기 엄흥섭은 ‘리얼리즘’과 ‘로맨티시즘’을 융합하는 창작 방식을 지향하였고, ‘있는 그대로’가 아닌 ‘있어야 할 것’을 소설에 묘사해야 한다고 주장하였다. 둘째, 작가의 지향이 소설에 반영된 지점을 확인하기 위해 등장인물을 중점적으로 분석하였다. 남녀 지식인이 취업과 연애 문제에 고민하는 장면을 살펴봄으로써 이것이 특수한 개인이 아닌 보편의 문제임을 확인하였다. 특히 남성 인물이 현실 공간을 벗어나 새로운 곳으로 떠난 장면과 여성 인물이 관계의 속박을 극복하고자 시도한 대목은 초월의 가능성을 제시한 점에서 중요하다. 결과적으로 이 논문은 등장인물을 면밀하게 관찰하여 ‘약동하는 삶’의 가능성을 읽어내고자 하였고, 이 작품을 밀도 있는 리얼리즘 소설로 해석하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to reread Eom Heung-seop’s novel The Lover of the Century (1939) and examine the method of realism pursued by the writer on the premise of the difference between the serial and the book. Previous studies, because they mainly analyzed serials, did not analyze in detail the psychological changes of the characters and the way they cope with reality, and defined the attitude of the male protagonist as the characteristic of the work, so there was a need for re-reading. Based on this awareness of the problem, the following content was discussed. First, I looked at how this novel was evaluated by commentators at the time. As a result, there was a coexistence of the positive evaluation that it harmonized popularity and art, and the criticism that it was a schematic and bourgeois love novel. During this period, Eom Heung-seop pursued a creative approach that fused ‘realism’ with ‘romanticism’ and insisted on depicting ‘what should be’ in his novels rather than ‘what is’. Secondly, I focused on the characters to identify the points where the author's orientation was reflected in the novel. I confirmed that this is a universal problem, not a particular individual one, by examining the scene where male and female intellectuals struggle with employment and dating problems. In particular, the scene in which a male character leaves real space for a new place and the scene in which a female character tries to overcome the bondage of relationships are important in that they suggest the possibility of transcendence. Ultimately, this article attempts to read the possibility of ‘changing lives’ through close observation of the characters and interprets the work as a reality-reflective novel.
