1950년대 소설 속 명동족의 표상

본고는 1950년대 명동족 표상에 대한 분석을 통해 전후 사회, 새로운 가치와 윤리에의 탐색이 가진 의미를 세대와 젠더의 측면에서 살펴보고자 한다. 1950년대 대중문화에서 명동은 소비와 향락의 퇴폐적인 공간이자 문화예술인의 낭만이 교차되는 공간이다. 50년대 명동거리의 최첨단 유행과 소비문화를 즐기며 기성 윤리에의 도전과 새로운 질서에의 탐색을 실천한 명동족, 명동형 인간은 다양한 대중소설에서 특징적인 의미망을 형성하고 있다. 장덕조의 『격랑』, 한무숙의 『빛의 계단』, 김래성의 『실낙원의 별』, 이무영의 『계절의 풍속도』 등 1950년대 다양한 장편소설에서 명동족, 명동청년, 명동형, 명동숙녀를 둘러싼 사건들은 일상을 선정적인 구경거리로 재편해 보인다. 이들 소설에서 명동청년은 명랑성-현대성과 불량성-도피성 사이에서 유동하는 존재로 형상화된다. 이들은 기성 사회에 맞서 자유로운 개인의 욕망을 드러내며, 교환 논리에 입각해 새로운 가치를 탐색하는 존재로 나타난다. 화려한 스타일의 명동 마담들은 이봉구의 ｢여수｣나 임옥인의 『젊은 설계도』 등에서 문화인의 계몽적 위치와 선정적인 구경거리의 위치 사이에서 균열하면서 미적 세계의 꿈을 환기한다.

This paper aims to examine the postwar modern society, the meaning of the search for new values a n d ethics in terms of generation and gender through analysis of the representation of Myeongdong people in the 1950s. In popular culture in the 1950s, Myeong-dong is a decadent space of consumption and pleasure, and a space where the romance of cultural artists intersects. Myeongdong people and Myeongdong-type, who enjoyed the edge fashion and consumer culture of Myeong-dong street in the 50s, challenged established ethics and practiced search for a new order, formed a characteristic semantic network in various popular novels. In various novels in the 1950s, such as Jang Deok-jo's 『Raging wave』, Han Moo-sook's 『Stairway of Light』, Kim Rae-seong's 『Star of Paradise Lost』, and Lee Moo-young's 『Seasonal Wind Speed』, the incidents surrounding the Myeongdong people, the Myeongdong young man, the Myeongdong-type, and the Myeongdong lady seem to reorganize daily life into a sensational spectacle. In these novels, the Myeongdong youth is embodied as a being floating between cheerfulness-modernity and delinquency-escape. They reveal their individual desires against the established society and appear as beings who explore new values b a sed on the logic of exchange. Myeongdong madams of splendid style evoke the dream of the aesthetic world while cracking between the enlightened position of cultural figures and the position of sensational spectacle in Lee Bong-gu's ｢Yeosu｣ and Lim Ok-in's 『Young Blueprint』.
