하드보일드 소설 관습의 수용과 변용 : 양귀자의 『나는 소망한다 내게 금지된 것을』을 중심으로

이 글은 양귀자의 『나는 소망한다 내게 금지된 것을』에서 하드보일드 소설 관습의 수용과 변용이 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 분석한다. 이 소설은 1992년 발간 당시에는 현실성이 부족하고 페미니즘과 거리가 멀다는 이유로 혹평받았으며, 작가가 ‘추리소설의 기법’을 사용하였다고 밝혔음에도 불구하고 장르문학 관점에서 읽히지 않았다. 그러나 이 글은 『나는 소망한다 내게 금지된 것을』이 하드보일드 소설 관습을 수용하고 변용하는 과정에서, 어떻게 현실을 반영하고 위계적 젠더 체계를 교란하고 있는가를 밝히고자 한다.
이 소설에서 이루어진 범죄는 부조리한 현실을 바꾸지 못하는 법과 제도에 대한 불신을 바탕으로 한 사적 복수의 형태를 띤다. 이는 하드보일드 소설의 관습과, 90년대 초에 급부상한 여성 주체 범죄 서사를 떠받치고 있는 성적으로 불평등한 현실을 모두 반영한 결과로 볼 수 있다.
또한 이 소설은 강민주라는 여성 터프가이를 주인공으로 내세움으로써 남성성을 강조하는 하드보일드 소설 관습의 변용을 꾀한다. 소설에서 이루어진 성의 전도는 위계적 젠더 질서에 충격을 가한다. 그러나 전도만으로는 기존의 질서를 해체하고 새로운 질서를 형성할 수 없다. 강민주의 변화는 이러한 전도의 한계를 인지하고 새로운 젠더 체계를 상상하는 자리에서 이루어졌다.
Abstract
Even if Yang Gui-Ja claimed I wish for what is forbidden to me to be the mystery genre when the novel was published in 1992, critics have not read it as a sort of genre fiction. Furthermore, critics harshly criticized I wish for what is forbidden to me because the novel poorly represents reality, and this novel is not a feminism literature. However, this paper aims to explain Yang Gui-Ja’s I wish for what is forbidden to me in terms of hard-boiled fiction. In particular, I will show that as a hard-boiled fiction, I wish for what is forbidden to me successfully captures the reality and dismantles the patriarchal gender system.
In I wish for what is forbidden to me, the main female character, Kang Min-Ju, conducts a personal vendetta because of her distrust of the malfunctioning criminal justice system. The distrust of the criminal justice system is one of features of hard-boiled fiction. Also, as female crime narratives that rapidly rose in the 1990s, Kang Min-ju’s vendetta represents the reality in which the criminal justice system contributes to perpetuating gender discrimination and inequality in society.
Kang Min-ju is a 'female' tough guy. The emphasis on masculinity is at the heart of hard-boiled fictions. Yang Gui-Ja intentionally reversed the gender of male and female. The inversion of sexuality impacts the hierarchical gender order. However, the inversion cannot dismantle the existing order and form a new order. To overcome the limitations of this inversion and imagine a new gender system, Kang Min-ju had to be changed.
