예외상태 속 미망인의 욕망 서사와 『세기의 종』
초록
정비석의 『세기의 종』은 1950년대를 대표하는 캐릭터라 할 수 있는, 한국전쟁기 예외상태 속 납치/월북미망인의 생존과 욕망, 윤리의 문제를 제기하고 있다. 본고는 납치/월북 미망인의 운명을 중심으로 여성의 욕망과 그 발현방식이 가진 의미를 분석하고자 한다. 월북미망인 안혜옥은 유혹하는 여성으로서 엔조이의 논리로 가부장제 사회의 모순을 고발한다. 그녀는 자유로운 유혹을 통해 남성의 모순되고 저열한 욕망을 조롱하고 처벌하며 가부장제 사회의 질서를 전복하는 매저키즘을 구현한다. 안혜옥과 달리 납치미망인 민영심은 표면에서 교양과 윤리를 강조하지만, 이면에서 가부장제의 금기에 대한 위반 욕망을 광기와 히스테리로 표출한다. 그녀는 폭력적으로 남성의 육체를 점령하고 가부장제 규율을 파괴하는 음험한 향락, 주이상스를 구현한다. 과잉된 욕망과 자유로운 유혹으로 가부장제 사회의 윤리와 질서를 위반하고 비판하는 여성의 모습은 50년대 중반 이후 정비석의 소설에서 긍정적인 의미를 상실해간다. 『세기의 종』은 전쟁기 예외상태의 현실 속 법질서나 윤리 너머의 여성적 욕망과 자유를 투영한 소설이라 할 것이다.
Abstract
<A bell of the century> by Bi-seok Jeong raises the issues of survivor, desire and moral of widows who’s husbands being taken away/ going to North Korea at the time of Korean war, as a state of exception. This study aims to analyse the meaning of a woman’s desire and its revelation centering around the widows’s lot. Hae-ok An, a widow who’s husband going to North Korea, is a woman of temption so she makes a complaint against the inconsistency of the patriarch society with logic of enjoyment. She ridicules and punishes a man’s inconsistent, vulgar desire with her liberal temption so she embodies Masochism which upset the patriarchy system. Besides Hae-ok An, Yeong-sim Min, a widow who’s husband being taken away, emphasizes her education and moral at the outside but she express a desire for violation about the patriarch taboo with madness and hysteria at the inside. She forcely occupies a man’s body and express jouissance, a dangerous possession which destroy the patriarch rules. The aspect of women who violate and criticize the rule and system of the patriarch society with her excessive desire and liberal temption goes to lose its positive meaning in the novel by Bi-seok jeong after the middle 1950s. <A bell of the century> is a positive value as a novel which show women desire and liberality beyond the law and morals at the time of Korean war, as a state of exception.
