Abstract

For this study, efforts were made to analyzes how Choi Jeong-hee's pro-Japanese discourse was shaped through her works with Choi's six pro-Japanese novels which had so far been discovered and introduced and to figure out the struggle between concepts of ‘women's liberation’ and ‘nation / pro-Japanese’. The existing studies were focused on ‘pro-Japanese’ aspects of Choi Jeong-hee's pro-Japanese literature and in consequence, they failed to properly read the desire for female liberation operating within the text, or were focused on Choi's literature just within the ‘feminist’ perspective and failed to eliminate or signify Choi's pro-Japanese literature. This study was envisioned as a reaction for such cases. To this end, the study attempted to reveal the uniqueness of Choi Jeong-hee's pro-Japanese literature by comparing how the Total Mobilization System under Japanese rule actually consumed women and how ‘women-persons’ were embodied in Choi's novels. The study tried to highlight the desire for ‘female liberation’ which actually occupied the upper position over ‘nation’, in particular. Through this, the study is expected to clearly show the status of ‘women / writers’ in ‘pro-Japanese literature / research,’ which has not been fully revealed in studies of numerous male writers.
