손창섭의 ｢잊을 수 없는 과거｣ 연구

본고에서는 손창섭의 최근 발굴작 ｢잊을 수 없는 과거｣에 대한 분석을 시도했다. 일차적으로 이 작품의 서사구조가 어떠한지를 살폈다. 그 결과 기존 작품에서 보았던 손창섭만의 문학적 특장, 예컨대 남성의 폭력성, 상처받은 여성, 결혼문제, 여성의 수난, 원치 않은 결혼과 이혼 등이 고스란히 드러났다. 이러한 문학적 특징은 그의 초기작에서부터 1960년대에 발표한 신문연재소설에 이르기까지 계열화되었다.

이 작품에 등장한 손창섭의 남성인물은 여성과의 관계에서 폭력적이거나 비정상적인 관계를 맺으려 하는 성향을 보였다. 두 번째 상처받은 여성을 바라보거나 이를 해결하려는 주변인물들의 태도가 여전히 멸시와 조롱으로 가득 차 있었다. 세 번째 손창섭의 여성인물들은 남성들의 폭력에 시달린 피해자였음에도 주변사람들로부터 위로를 받기는커녕 무책임한 재혼을 권유받았다. 네 번째 남성인물은 이상적 타자의 주변을 맴도는 다른 남성들에 대해 부정의식을 표출했다. 마지막으로는 아버지로 상징화된 세계에 대해 부정의식을 드러냈다.

이상으로 살펴본바, 이 작품이 기존 작품들과 유사한 패턴(계열)을 보인다고 해서 또한 대중지에 발표되었다고 해서 작품성을 폄훼할 필요는 없다. 손창섭의 인물은 차이를 통한 반복으로 완성된 새로운 주체이기 때문이다. 요컨대 이 작품은 손창섭에게 있어 본격문학에서 대중성으로 가는 징검다리 역할을 했으며, 1950년대에 함몰된 손창섭을 그 이후의 ‘손창섭’으로 끌어올리는 역할을 했다.

This writing tried to analyze Son, Chang-sup’s recent found novel, The Unforgettable Past. First, this writing looked into the narrative structure of this novel. As a result, the literary features of Son Chang-sup, which was shown in his previous works, were revealed. For example, violence in men, hurt women, marriage problems, women's sufferings, unwanted marriages and divorces. These literary features have been séried from his early works to newspaper serial novels published in the 1960s.

Son, Chang-sup’s male character in this novel tried to have violent or abnormal relationships with women. Second, the attitudes of people who looked at wounded woman were still full of contempt and mokery. Third, although Son, Chang-sup’s female characters were victims of men’s violence, they were invited to irresponsible remarriage rather than being comforted by people around them, Fourth, the male character expressed negative consciousness about men who hovered around the woman they liked. Finally, he expressed his negative consciousness about the world symbolized by father.

As a result, there is no need to denigrate the value of this novel just because it shows patterns similar to his previous novels and has been published in public magazine. Son, Chang-sup's character is a new subject that was completed by repetition through differences. In short, this novel was a bridge for Son, Chang-sup to move from pure literature to popularity literature. In addition, this novel played a role in raising Son, Chang-sup, which had been sunk in the 1950s, to the later ‘Son, Chang-sup’.
