미니멀리즘 서사의 가능성과 의미 : 스마트소설의 장르 정체성과 스토리텔링 사례를 중심으로
초록
본고는 ‘스마트소설’ 장르를 통해 디지털 시대 새로운 창작 경향인 미니멀리즘 서사의 가능성과 의미를 재고해보려는 시도에 해당한다. 스마트소설은 계간 『문학나무』와 소설가 박인성기념사업회의 주관 아래 지속적인 작품 산출과 지원이 이루어지고 있는 픽션 장르의 정식 명칭으로, 스마트폰으로 읽되 정통 서사의 품격과 문학성을 추구한다는 고유의 장르 정체성을 지향하고 있다. 스마트소설의 성립요건 및 심사기준으로 제시된 분량, 압축미와 간결미, 시사성은 스마트소설의 창작 기법이자 스토리텔링 방식이기도 하다.
첫째 ‘분량’의 경우 제한된 분량을 활용하는 창의적 발상법, 즉 짧기 때문에 가능한 새로운 상상력을 의미한다. 이 때문에 문자문학의 서사 전개방식에 의존하기보다 강렬한 인상과 분위기, 이미지가 서사를 이끌거나 주제를 대신하는 경우가 많다. 둘째 ‘압축미와 간결미’란 플롯의 운용 능력과 관련되는 바, 단순히 내러티브의 물리적 축소와 축약이 아니라 스마트소설만의 완결된 구조적 미학을 구현해낼 수 있어야 한다는 의미이다. 이는 시공간적 배경과 단위의 최소화, 그리고 서사의 공백을 활용하는 숨김과 드러냄의 기법 이 두 가지 방식으로 실현된다. 셋째 ‘시사성’이라는 요건은 당대적 소재를 얼마나 새로운 각도에서 보여주는가의 문제이다. 스마트소설은 상대적으로 현실에 빠르고 민감하게 반응할 수 있으며, 짧기 때문에 오히려 더 강렬하게 현재를 환기시킬 수 있다는 데 강점이 있다.
그런데 실제로 스마트소설의 성격을 보면 여전히 새로움에 대한 강박과 소설 전통에 대한 집착이 혼재되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 새로움보다는 짧은 이야기임에도 ‘불구하고’ 정통서사를 소비할 수 있는 가능성 쪽에 무게추를 기울이고 있는 상황인 것이다. 스마트소설이 단순히 스마트폰에 옮겨 심어진 이종(移種) 소설에 머물지 않고 이종(異種) 장르로 도약하기 위해서는 향후 이에 걸맞은 스토리텔링 기법을 계발하고 스마트폰이라는 플랫폼을 구동한 시스템 구축과 독서방식에 대한 다양한 실험이 시도될 필요가 있다.
Abstract
The thesis of this paper is to reconsider the possibilities and meanings of the minimalism narrative, a new creative tendency in the digital age through the ‘smart novel’ genre.
There are three criteria for establishing and the criterion for evaluation of the smart novel genre; Length, Compressive beauty, and Current affairs material.
First of all, ‘Length’ require creative thinking that takes advantage of a limited length and another imagination as much as possible in short story. For this reason, rather than relying on the epic development method of writing literature, strong impression and mood images often lead the narrative or replace the theme. Second, ‘Compressive beauty’ means that it should be able to realize the complete structural aesthetics of smart novels, not just reduction and contraction of narratives. This is realized by using a method of cross-section of a temporal and spatial background or by utilizing narrative's blank space as a technique of hiding and revealing. Third, ‘Current affairs material’ is whether the present consciousness of the problem is suggested in a new angle.
In the case of smart novels until now, It is focusing on the possibility of traditional narratives, even if it's based on a smartphone, Therefore, in order for smart novels to evolve into a heterogeneous genre, various experiments need to be conducted on the system and reading methods that have developed storytelling techniques that are different from novel writing, and that have driven a platform called smart phones.
